The past couple weeks have found Scott busy working on filling and leveling the ground at Good Samaritan Church in Reynosa. The work is going slowly, but it is getting done.
Last Saturday, we had the opportunity to partner with another ministry in Reynosa and provide lunch for 50 kids who come each Saturday to learn more about Christ. They were so excited to eat as much hot dogs, chips, and sodas as their tummies could hold. It was a good day.
Today, we learned of the deaths of a little boy and a young man. The little boy was 9 yrs old and lived in Rio Bravo. He had been playing with some friends and somehow found a belt tightened around his neck to the point of death. All the circumstances aren't clear, but a family is hurting. The services will be held at Pastor Mario's church tonight.
I went across into Reynosa this afternoon to take some food and medicine to a family. It was then that I learned a boy that I had known for several years had been killed a few weeks ago. He was shot to death. He chose to follow into the "easy life" that the cartels offered him. It was that decision that caused his death. I was speechless when I heard. I thought I misunderstood the Spanish translation. I hoped I had misunderstood. I made her repeat it several times to be sure. It was true. He was killed. My heart broke and tears flowed down my face.
This is the reality in the lives of the people we serve. We have heard it said "it is better to live a "good" life and die at 20 than be poor and live to 60". This is why we work with Pastors to help reach out to these kids with the love and hope of our Savior. This is why we were called here.
The whole drive home, all I could think of were my many interactions with this young man. We shared the truth with him, but the choice to follow was his. My family will never forget him.

Over the past couple weeks, Scott has been working on filling and leveling the ground for the new building at Good Samaritan Church. Once completed, the church will have a feeding center - which is really needed. This would allow the children in the area to be guaranteed a meal once a day. What a wonderful way for the church to be able to reach out into the community even more. This building is a work of faith. We are building block by block, dollar by dollar as the Lord provides. We aren't sure how long it will take, but we know that it will be in God's perfect time. The work over the past weeks has been rough and tiring. Scott enlisted Clay's help for several days. One day, the guys were just pulling into the church - still physically exhausted from the day before - they were so moved to find a couple adults and a bunch of children waiting for them. THEY WANTED TO HELP!! They had been watching Scott & Clay working so hard and wanted to help them. WHAT A HUGE BLESSING!!

PRAYER REQUESTS:
Please pray for continued safety as we travel in Mexico.

Please pray for God's hand of provision over our family and ministry. We are in need of additional monthly partners. We understand that the economy is bad right now - but we pray that people would consider coming alongside us.

Please pray for physical healing for Lisa. The last year has been filled with many "ups and downs". Please pray for her complete healing.

Christmas Party

This year we had an even larger group of kids come to the Christmas Party at Good Samaritan Church in Reynosa, Mexico...45+ kids. That means even MORE kids heard the gospel and were fed a meal. The evening started with a Christmas program, followed by a craft, dinner, games, dessert, and presents!! What a blast!! The kids had hot dogs, hot cheetos, soda, and cake to eat. As much as they wanted!! Not sure when the last time was that these kids felt FULL.

Each family represented was given a Christmas Bag. Each bag had enough beans and rice for a month, laundry detergent, bin of supplies (washcloths, shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, matches, razors, combs, candy, and more), blankets, and a child's toy. These families were so grateful for such needed gifts!!

This is the 3rd year we have hosted a Christmas Party at Good Samaritan. It has become an occasion that the kids start looking forward to months ahead of time. They are always so excited!!

Because of a generous donation, we were able to provide more food and Bags than we had originally planned. We were also able to bless two other churches in Rio Bravo with Christmas Bags and gifts for the Pastors.

Over the past few weeks, Scott has been working at Good Samaritan Church. He has completed one classroom - in which we used donated carpet squares and even repurposed bathroom dividers into new benches for the children- both items donated from our church in TX. Pastor Francisco and Lulu were so excited about this new classroom. This week, Scott is continuing work on another classroom. We pray that God will provide the funds needed to build the new sanctuary for this church. It is located in an area that has so much need for the hope that only our loving Savior can offer.

Last Wednesday we learned that Jaime, a young man that had helped Scott on projects at Good Samaritan Church over the past couple years, had died at the age of 26 the day before. Over the past year and a half, Pastor Francisco had noticed that Jaime had been associating with the "wrong crowd". The area that he lived in was known for drugs. Francisco would talk with him and encourage him to leave those people and come back to the church. Jaime always replied the same way...."Soon". On Wednesday night, Scott and Francisco stood at a cemetery in Reynosa - surrounded by men who were known for selling drugs in the area where Jaime lived. What a sad day. A young man who had been a blessing to us with his hard work - never found the time to turn away from what he knew was wrong.

FOR THOUGHT.....Each one of us is given a certain amount of days on this earth. We don't know how long God has planned for each of us - we hope we live to a ripe old age - but that isn't always the case. How easy it is to say "Soon". We want to change the things in our lives that we know don't please God, but not today...SOON. We want to reach out and make a difference in the world around us, but we're just so busy....we'll do something SOON. We want to spend time with our families and MAKE SURE they know how precious they are to us, but it's just too hard to get everyone together - maybe we will sometime SOON. So many things we want to do....we'll get to them SOON. Well, dear friend, you aren't guaranteed that you will even have tomorrow. Choose today to CHANGE, IMPACT, AND LOVE.

Over the past few weeks, Scott has continued work at Pastor Mario's church. We are completing room by room. It is a slow process, but an encouraging one since Mario had no idea when he might be able to complete this building before Scott came alongside him. Last week, we were contacted by a church in TX that was replacing some carpet tiles in their church building. They gladly offered us the tiles - if we would remove them. So, Scott and the kids went and removed several hundreds of tiles and brought them home. We have taken a large load across the border already, and will continue to take pieces over the next weeks. This carpet will be a HUGE blessing to Pastor Francisco and his church.
We are just wrapping up a fundraiser and are excited to see God's provision for several months of food to be supplied for people in need. We will be dividing these funds between three of the churches we work alongside. The people will be so excited to be given this food from their Pastors. Thank you to everyone who helped with the fundraiser - YOU HAVE BEEN A BLESSING!!
Scott's dad and Aunt came for a visit. It is so nice to be able to spend time with them. We wish that the distance wasn't so far to be able to be together more often.

PRAISE!! Earlier this year, Scott was hit by a bus in Reynosa and it ripped his driver's side mirror off. We hadn't been able to find a replacement - so we duct taped a cosmetic mirror to the van so that he could see. (I know it sounds funny - doesn't it??) Well, Scott and his dad went to a local junk yard on Friday and they not only found a replacement mirror, but had it installed all for ONLY $40. We are so thankful that the expense wasn't too bad. Thank you Lord.

This is my encouragement for you today....look for God even in the small things. He's there and worthy of praise. We praised God for providing a mirror for our van. We acknowledged His hand. Instead of focusing on the things we are lacking in our lives, maybe we can try to take the time and see God's hand in all the little things. Maybe a change in our perspective in just what we need.....Your prayers of praise are such a sweet aroma to Him. ~God Bless You!!

A few weeks ago, Scott went and visited a friend from our church who was working on a project in Rio Bravo, Mexico. He was introduced to a Mexican national who was helping. This man shared how they have been in the process of building an orphanage for the past several years in Progreso. Scott felt the Lord was leading him to go and see the site and see if there was any help that we could offer. So he did. This children's home will initially house 8 children on the main floor and as funds are provided - will house an additional 20 children on the second floor. The building has many projects to be completed prior to being able to have the children come in. We prayed about it and feel God's leading us to come alongside this family as they begin their journey on changing the lives of these precious little ones. Scott has already spent a few days there. He built cabinets and a prep counter/eating area in the kitchen. As God provides the funds we will continue on the various other projects.
Work has continued at Pastor Mario's church in Rio Bravo. We now have almost two classrooms completely done. Scott will continue working there for the rest of this week.
We are looking forward to Scott's dad possibly coming down for a couple days this month. It will be nice to see him. We are very excited.

Please continue to pray for my health. The medicine that I have been taking is still having quite a few side effects. Please pray for wisdom if we continue on this or begin a whole different type. I feel as though I have sounded as a dripping faucet over the past two years. Always seems to be something going on. I'm not exactly sure why all of this is happening, but I am confident of this....no matter the circumstance - to Him be the glory. I cannot express how much I appreciate your prayers and notes of encouragement. They have truly carried me through.

Over the last several weeks, Scott has continued helping Pastor Mario in Rio Bravo with the work on the classrooms. The work is going slowly as Scott is working alone - but it is coming along well. Pastor Mario is very excited that this weekend they will be able to use one of the classrooms!!
We've also been doing a bit of work at Pastor Francisco's church. We are praying that God will provide the funds needed to continue the construction so the feeding center can get started. This will be such a blessing for these children to be able to count on at least one meal a day.
Scott & a retired man from our church also go across usually once a week and help another missionary in Reynosa with projects around his orphanage. They are such a blessing.
On Monday, Scott will be meeting with a man who is beginning construction on an orphanage. He will be seeing what types of projects are needing to be done and if it is something we are capable of doing.
Our Back to School Outreach was a HUGE success!! This year we received enough money for almost 300 backpacks full of supplies to be handed out. They were distributed through 3 churches in Rio Bravo and Reynosa, Mexico. The parents and the children were so excited!! Thank you to each of you who helped make this outreach possible.

We are so thankful to each person who makes it possible for us to reach out to the people of Mexico with God's love. It is hard to write just how big of an impact you are having across the way. Lives are being changed, hearts are being encouraged, and souls are being saved. The Kingdom is growing because of you. THANK YOU.

PRAYER REQUESTS:
* I (Lisa) have started a new medication that will help with some of the symptoms I have been having over the last several months. The medicine has brought many side effects though. It has been a very difficult 3 weeks so far. We are told that it may take up to 6 weeks for the side effects to wear off and the medicine to take full effect. Please pray for patience and strength during these next weeks.

*Please pray for continued safety as Scott goes across each day. Pray that he will be protected from the violence that continues in the border towns.

*Please pray for our family as we try to plan a few days away in the next couple months. We would like to be able to go away and just be together and rest. We feel this is something greatly needed.

Over the past few weeks, we have been helping another Pastor (Mario) in Rio Bravo with a construction project. Scott has been helping to frame out walls for classrooms for the children. Pastor Mario helped Scott at Mision Bautista many times - so it seemed fitting for us to help him now.
Our Back to School Outreach is in full swing. A filled backpack for a child in need is ONLY $7. These will be distributed through the churches we serve alongside in Reynosa and Rio Bravo, Mexico. Donations for backpacks can be mailed to us - or given through our website www.borderofhope.org Donations will be accepted through the end of August.
I (Lisa) am a volunteer in the high school ministry at our church. This week, I will be travelling with our two oldest children - along with a couple hundred other 7th-12th graders - to camp in Northern Texas. I am very excited about the opportunity. We look forward to seeing all that the Lord has in store. Please pray for our safety. Please also pray for my health. I am praying that this week will be a free of pain. Please also pray for Scott who will be here with our youngest two. They will be working on a project at our church in Texas this week - which will help to pass the time.

I was thinking.......Sometimes we might begin to worry or feel discouraged - this is when we find ourselves on our knees more often. We know that so many of the circumstances in our lives are fully out of our control - so we live by faith. Before going into full-time service, I never had to be concerned about the things I am now. I took for granted how comfortable and how safe my life was back then. But now, I have to rely fully on the generosity of others to provide even the bare necessities for our family. Well, the past couple of weeks have found us on our knees seeking God's guidance about these very things. A couple days ago, our hearts filled with gratitude and our eyes filled with tears - when our family received an unexpected blessing. It is in times like these when we speechless at His provision. I encourage you today, Cast all your cares upon Him...for He cares for you.

Reality Check

As I write this...it is the normal dinner time for most folks. Many of us will look in our pantries or lean into our fridges and say the same thing..."I have NOTHING to make for dinner." We've all said it at one time or another, right? Somehow I doubt that statement is true.
Today, I was talking to a friend in Reynosa and she was praising God for all the many blessings He has given to her. Then I asked how her health was - she then shared that her struggles with Cancer and diabetes are making her summer a difficult and painful ordeal. I asked if they needed anything - to which she graciously replied "no". God encouraged me to ask again. She then told me that they had been without food for several days and that she had no medicine to help manage her pain. My heart broke again. I remember the first time I went to her house and saw that she had no food in her cupboards.....NONE. It brought me to tears to think that she and her family (including an 18 month old granddaughter) would go hungry again tonight. We made a run to the store and filled the cart with food, supplies, and meds and Scott just got back from taking them across the border. Tonight their stomachs will be filled.
The only difference between us and our friends in Mexico ... is that we were blessed to be born on this side of the border. Only a small river separates us but at times it feels like they are living in a whole other world. Most of us don't have to go days without food. We don't have to live in homes without water or electricity. We don't have to worry about grenades and bombs going off where our little ones are playing. Sometimes I don't think we stop and realize how truly blessed we are to live in this country.
I encourage you today to thank God for the many ways He has blessed you. I realize our lives are not all easy or perfect. Some are filled with trials. Even still, like my friend, you can praise the One from whom all blessings flow.

Prayer Requests

We wanted to request prayer for a couple things:
First, please pray for our son, Clay. On Thursday, he had the first part of the "appliance" installed to correct the defect in his jaw. He is experiencing a fair amount of pain - plus it makes it difficult for him to speak clearly or even eat. This Thursday, they will install the second part of the "appliance". Please pray that this installation will not be too painful and that this defect will be improved. It is not yet clear how long he will have to wear it.
Second, please pray for me, Lisa. I have had a great deal of pain in my stomach for the past few days. It has been very uncomfortable and has made it impossible to do much of anything. Please pray that the Lord will take this pain away and heal my stomach fully.

Over the past few weeks, we have been working to complete the Tovar's new home which is second story of the Mision Bautista Berea Church in Rio Bravo, MX. We are so excited to share that the house is ALMOST COMPLETE!! All we are waiting on is for the electric company to come and connect the power. Other than that, the house is ready and waiting for the family to move in!! We went and cleaned the house last week and filled it with items that we had collected along the way. As I write this, Scott is trying to cross with a bed for the family. We are praying that the electric company will come quickly, but realistically it may still take another 45 days.
Last week, Scott and another local pastor, completed the outside texturing on the church. It looks wonderful. Scott will be helping this pastor, Mario, with some construction projects at his church now.

I stood in the doorway of Mision Bautista and was moved to tears as I thought about how much change has happened there over the past year. We have seen a church be built - after 7 years of waiting. We have seen the congregation grow and lives brought to Christ. We have seen a home built - that will house 3 generations!! We have seen so much. We praise God for all that He has done. It is hard to find the right words to say. We want to express not only our gratitude, but also the gratitude of the Tovar family to each of you who has faithfully given financial gifts to make this build possible OR have faithfully held up this project and our family in your prayers. You have been part of something so very special. We look forward to all that the Lord has in store for this church body and this family. May God bless each one of you. The slide show below is friends from Chicago that just came to see us. We were able to take them across and share the work that has been done at Mision Bautista due to their generosity. The building was built in memoriam of their uncle who passed away last year. Because of him, many have already come to hear about Christ and the others still to come are countless. The Tovars were very emotional as they shared their hearts with us. They prayed blessings over everyone there for all the work that has been done. We ate together prior to heading back. It was a wonderful day. We spent some more time with our guests and had a blast. Our hearts were so encouraged by their words and their prayers. We were sad to see them go.
We have heard from many of you since our last post - and we want to say thank you so much. We so appreciate all the prayers, notes, and financial gifts. They mean more than you know.
Work at the church has continued this week. It has been warm, but Scott and his helpers have continued working hard. There are a few things that remain to be done --- and then the family will move into their new home...and finally be RENT FREE!! They look forward to not being so far away from the church and the people they serve. Only a little while more...
Scott is scheduled for jury duty next week -- not sure how many days that will be.

Remaining Faithful

"It's easy to serve Me when things are going your way....everyone is willing to do that, BUT when things are harder than you can imagine....will you STILL serve Me or will you throw your hands up and quit?" This is the question that the Lord asked Scott & I last week. Almost 4 years ago, we dedicated our family, our everything, to serve the Lord whereever He would lead us. Up to this point, serving Him hasn't always been easy - we've faced financial hardship, health problems, and even discouragement -- but all those things were manageable. Last Friday, everything came to a screeching halt!! Scott had just dropped off his helper for the day. He was driving to a plumbing supply store down a major road in Reynosa when his van was hit. A woman pulled out of a parking spot without looking and hit Scott on his rear panel just near the tire. He pulled ahead and then got out of the van. He looked at the damage to our van and saw that it was minimal. The woman's car had a bit more damage. Within just a short time, the woman's son and the police showed up. They questioned Scott what had happened and he explained and they took his license and insurance info. They then went and talked to the woman. They returned to Scott and said that he would have to go to the police station with them. On his way to the station, things ran through his mind like "maybe I should try to get away and get to the border??" Thankfully he didn't. Once he was at the station, he was taken into a back room with 6 officers. He said when he entered the room - he was very unsure what to expect. The fear was beginning to build. He was questioned again and even asked to draw how the accident happened. They asked if he was a liar. The police talked with the woman again and determined that Scott was at fault! Which is no where near the truth. The son then said that it would cost 750 US dollars for them to repair his mom's car. The police came back to Scott and said that is what he would have to pay or else he would be put into jail. Scott explained that he didn't have that much money and the police then said they could take him to an ATM to get more. He withdrew $500 - which is all he could get - and then returned to the station. He explained that he couldn't get anymore money - so the son thought he could make up the difference by relieving Scott of some of his tools. After the money and the tools were given - Scott was then free to leave. Once on the bridge, Scott called me and explained what had just happened. I could hear in his voice how bad the situation was - and that he was very afraid. It could have turned bad at any point and we are praising God that Scott was protected through it all. The money that Scott was able to withdraw would not have been there just 2 days before -- thankfully our friends from IN had collected some funds to help us with our recent travel costs and we had deposited it. Once he made it home, we began to pray for wisdom if this event was a door closing from God about our ministry in MX or maybe it was a tool of discouragement from the evil one?? We've heard..."you won't go back there right?" - "you should just tuck and run and get back to a normal life" - "those people just aren't worth risking so much for" Although we understand that no one else is able to comprehend God's calling on our lives - we have drawn a different conclusion about last week's events. We really feel that it was God asking, "will you serve Me still?" and our answer is ABSOLUTELY!! God has brought people alongside us over the past several days that have encouraged our hearts greatly. We would have much rather not have gone through all this, but if it's necessary for the world to see that we will remain faithful -- then so be it!! If our return to Mexico in spite of everything is able to show the love of our Savior to one person ... then it is all worth it. We thank you for your prayers. Please keep 'em coming. Please pray for protection as Scott goes across each day and for our financial needs to be met.
What about in your own life? It's so easy to serve when things are going your way, but will you still serve Him in the midst of the trials? I pray you will. He was willing to do so much for each of us.....so why wouldn't we be willing to do the same?

Since last Thursday, we have travelled many miles - but have returned home safely. We left for San Antonio on Thursday and stayed overnight with our friends (The Lietz Family)who would be helping take care of our kids while we were gone. We left for the airport at 4:15am on Friday morning and arrived in Indiana in the late morning after two flights. We were so excited to be able to visit with some friends (The Tanner Family)that we worked alongside at the school/orphanage that we served in a few years ago. We spent a few hours visiting with them and really enjoyed the fellowship. The reason for our visit there before heading to the memorial service was that they wanted to give us a vehicle that had been given to them a couple years ago when they were serving in Mexico. They felt that the truck should continued to be used for the purpose it was first given to them - ministry in Mexico. We were amazed at the generosity to give us the truck, but were even more amazed when we got there of the generosity of so many that had never even met us. The Tanner's had sent out messages to several friends and asked for any donations of clothes or blankets. Well, the whole back of the truck was able to get filled up!! Praise God! They also requested for people to help with gas money .... and they did!! Our travel expenses were covered by the generosity of so many families. I couldn't help but cry as we opened up envelope after envelope and saw the money tucked inside. We felt so blessed.
After leaving them, we headed to Flora, IL to meet up with Scott's dad and prepare for the service the following morning. The Memorial Service was very nice. A small group of family gathered together to honor Fran. It was good to see some of the family members that we hadn't seen in years. Our kids did great with our friends - they always have so much fun with their kids!! It was such a huge blessing that they helped us with caring for our kids. The work across continued within just hours of us making it back. Scott was across meeting with a Pastor who was needing counsel about some difficult situations happening. Today Scott is helping Pastor Mario (another Pastor in Rio Bravo) build some benches and help ready his church for a celebration later this week. While I will be working on getting caught up on ministry paperwork and doing school with the kids. Thank you so much for your prayers as we were gone.

Over the past couple weeks, little jobs have been getting taken care of at Pastor Alfredo's new home in Rio Bravo - doors, toilet, sink, etc. Little by little it is coming together - it is so exciting to see. We were told that it would take several thousand American dollars in order to connect into the city water/sewer line. Alfredo is looking into this and we are praying that is not the case.
On Friday, Scott worked in Reynosa and rewired most of Minerva's house as their electricity was blown last week. When he got there he couldn't believe how the house was wired to begin with --so many things wrong. He came back across and got some parts - thankfully a friend had given us some wire - otherwise this repair would have cost a lot more money than it did. He then went back and did all that he could - now at least they have lights. Very thankful that Scott was an electrician for so many years. Unfortunately, the power problem shorted out their refrigerator - which is something we don't have the means to replace right now. We pray that the Lord will provide the necessary funds.
We also took out food for Good Samaritan Church with the funds provided from Family of God Church in MN. We are very thankful to the youth group there that collected the money to provide this food for the past several months. What a blessing.
As we celebrated our Savior's death and resurrection this past week one thing continually came to mind. If Jesus was willing to give it all for us - then why shouldn't we be willing to give our all for Him? We know that everyone is not called to make as big a life change as we did 3 1/2 years ago....but He may be calling you to become a bit "uncomfortable". He may want you to cling less tightly to certain things in your life and rather draw closer to Him. He may want you to give more of your time for His service or more of your money to help further His kingdom. He may just simply want to hear you say, "Whatever you want from me -- it's Yours." Whatever He may be speaking to you about -- do it!! You will never regret it...I promise. God Bless You.

Below is a slide show including the helpers that have blessed us at Mision Bautista over the past couple months. So much has been able to be accomplished because of the willing hands of these people. Thank you to each one of you who has willingly served.
Last Saturday was the dedication of the Mision Bautista church. The church was overflowing with people and many had to sit outside. There were several Pastors from the area that came and shared in the dedication of this new church building. There was teaching, singing, eating, and praying. It was a blessing to everyone who attended. Seven years ago when Pastor Alfredo purchased this land he wasn't sure how he would ever be able to build a building. He patiently waited on the Lord to provide. When we originally followed God's leading in starting the construction - we weren't sure how we would be able to afford to build such a building but we began construction and the Lord provided. It has been amazing to see God's hand throughout this process. Now, a new colonia has formed in the field just across the street from the church and has brought many people into the area. What perfect timing for the church to be complete!!
We hope to complete the Pastor's home in the next several weeks. We are getting so close!! We are waiting on the Lord to provide the funds for a few more things and then we will be complete. The family is very excited about moving in soon. They look forward to living in the community in which they serve.
We set up the pool last week and our kids have enjoyed cooling off in the water. They are all doing well. School will go a bit longer this year as we fell a bit behind because of my health issues this year.
Please continue to pray for Scott's safety as he travels across each day. Please pray that we might gain more monthly supporters. Please also pray as we begin to prepare to travel next month for Scott's mom's memorial service.

PRAISE: A little over a week ago, we were so blessed to have the help of some friends from Chicago for a few days. They had come down to serve with some other missionaries, but were able to help us for a few days while they were here. These men (Chuck, Dave, Larry, & Roger) came to help work on Pastor Alfredo's home - and in a few days - completed what it would have taken us several weeks to accomplish. As the kids and I were painting on Friday, I couldn't help but look around and praise God for how much work these men actually did while they were here. It is so exciting to see the project moving forward. Because of their hard work, the family will be able to move in sooner than we were hoping. Praise God!! We still have a lot of work to do, but we stand in awe of how much has already been accomplished. We started this project in March 2010 when it was just a vacant lot - it has come so far. Thank you to all who have helped to make this project possible. We have been blessed with some visitors over the past two weeks and are expecting more this week. My parents will be coming down in April for their first visit to TX. We are so excited!! We are so thankful for the fellowship that we have been missing so much!! PRAYER REQUEST: With all the busyness over the past several weeks, it seems as though my body is not wanting to cooperate. I would really appreciate your prayers for strength and endurance over these next weeks as we try to complete several projects and entertain guests. We serve an awesome God - Who is doing HUGE things in Mexico - and we are so thankful to be able to be part of it!!

For the first part of this week, Scott did some electrical work at an orphanage in Reynosa. On Thursday, he returned to Mision Bautista and worked with a paid helper. On Friday, he was blessed with the help of Chuck (a friend from Chicago). He was ready to go bright and early and worked so hard. Scott was so excited to have him. They talked at the end of the day...and decided to go back today for a half day and work some more. But this morning when Scott went to pick Chuck up...he wasn't alone. Another friend of ours, Larry, was with him. Both men went across and worked with Scott today. It's hard to even express how much work these guys were able to accomplish in just a short time - but even more importantly.....it's even harder to express how much of a blessing they have been to us. A few more friends from Chicago will be arriving next week - and one of those men might be working with Scott as well. He might actually have a "crew" of men helping him for a few days. YEAH!!! Can't wait to share with you all that God is going to do through these guys!!

There have been many nights when Scott hasn't been able to sleep - thinking about all that has to be done and questioning how it's all going to come together. I have spent so much time on my knees praying that God would lighten his load somehow. Praying that God would provide funding to pay more helpers or send someone willing to help. He did!!

We knew that coming to the "field" would have many challenges. I guess I didn't expect isolation to be among them. We are thankful for the new friends that we have made during our time here, but we miss the friends and family that we have "history" with. To be honest, it's quite difficult at times - and those are the times we cling to each other tightly and hold onto God. But today we rejoice - for God has brought these men alongside us and they have encouraged us more than they may ever know. I'm not sure if they will ever read this or not, but just in case......thank you for being such a blessing to Scott (& my family) and for helping him in such a BIG way. You have been an answer to our prayers. Thank you for being willing vessels.

Last week Scott was primarily on this side of the border. He offered to help work on a roof and a concrete project at a children's home. With the help of some other men - much of the work was completed. Also, our church in TX donated some items they no longer needed - so we took them across and were able to bless 3 ministries with these things. What a huge blessing. These items will be such a great help! Thank you PVC!!

I was thinking........it seems like no matter where you look these days you constantly hear the word "success". Many think they can gauge their success by the type of car they drive, the size of their house, the balance in their bank account, or even the brand of clothes they wear. It's hard not to compare yourself or your things to those around you. For some people it seems that no matter how hard they work they simply can't ever get their head above water - let alone save enough money for that new car like the neighbors just purchased. Some people work so hard only to see the success fall in the lap of someone else. For some - it drives them crazy because they are constantly comparing themselves to others. We see this can even be true in churches and ministries. People may judge the "success" of a church by the number of bodies in the pews each week. Others may call a ministry "successful" based on the amount of "things" they have been able to do for others. Well, if you struggle with this - maybe you can see things from another perspective. You may not have the nicest car - but it gets you where you need to go. You may not have the largest house - but it's a home to your family. You may not have a penny left at the end of the month - but there's always next month. You may not have the most stylish clothes - but at least you have something to wear. Your church may not be the largest in your city - but whoever said bigger is better? You know everyone by name!! Your ministry may not have the means to do very much - but the lives you have touched are forever changed. Changing our perspective can be hard. It's hard to understand why others seem to "have it all" and we don't. That's when we need to see success through God's eyes and not our own.

If we serve the Lord with all our hearts and live a life that is pleasing to Him - then we are already a success. "Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed." (Prov. 16:3) BE ENCOURAGED!!

Weekly Update

Two weeks ago, we were approached by one of our Pastor friends who shared that they knew of an Evangelist who had dedicated his life for many years to spreading the gospel throughout MX. He shared that the rent on his home was almost the equivalent to the money that he had coming in each month. Last week, Scott and some helpers started construction on a new home for him. It is now under roof but is in need of siding, doors, etc. The house will be completed as the funds are provided. He is so excited that he will one day have a home of his own. This man has shown the love of Christ to so many -- and this week, it was his turn to be shown the same kind of love. We are so thankful to have been able to be part of this project.
Last week Scott was caught in a bit of a tense situation on his way to cross back into TX. He happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time - and there was nothing he could do about it. Thankfully the situation was resolved and Scott was able to cross after a little while. I have to tell you, my heart sank when I received his text messages describing what was going on. The kids & I sat and prayed. We called some other missionary friends (the Hepburns) to see if they were in MX and tell them to stay where they were, but thankfully they were in TX. We went online and looked at Twitter to see what people were saying about what was happening in Reynosa. Our hearts were heavy - but we knew that God was in control. The time seemed to tick so much slower while we waited for the next text message. We just kept praying. Thankfully, after a couple hours - he made it back to TX. Scott isn't easily rattled, but this had him fearful. We praise God for His protection of Scott that day and each day that he faithfully goes across and serves. The kids & I don't go across as much as we would like for these reasons, but Scott gets up early each morning and is across the border before our little ones are even awake. His trust in the Lord for his safety speaks volumes to the helpers that serve alongside him each day. They know that he comes in spite of what's going on - because the Lord has called him to. We pray that actions may speak louder than words and that the helpers who do not know the Lord may come to know Him because of Scott's testimony.

Work this week will continue on Mision Bautista. The "to do" list is still long, but one by one they are getting crossed off! PRAISE GOD!!

Last week the work continued at Mision Bautista in a BIG way!! The men have been working so hard to try to meet the goal of completion by the end of March. We are so excited!! The official dedication of the church will be at the beginning of April. We will be joined by the American family whose generosity made the building of this church possible. We are so excited that they will be flying in to participate in the festivities. I think the ladies of the church are preparing 2,000 tamales for that day....yummy!! As we enter the final stretch of construction, we present you with an URGENT NEED....would you please prayerfully consider helping us furnish this new home for Pastor Alfredo and his family? Last Saturday, a group of families from our church in TX came together and helped to cut, partially assemble, and prime the benches for Mision Bautista. It was such a fun day. Everyone worked so hard and had such servants hearts as they worked throughout the day. We weren't sure if all work would be completed or not, but to our surprise IT WAS!! We even had the kids out there helping too. It was so much fun. What a huge blessing these families were to not just us, but to the people in Mexico that will be using them each week. We weren't sure if we would have a problem getting the boards across the border or not - sometimes that is a real problem - but God shined upon us each time we crossed with boards. No problems - no fees.
We have hit a cold spell over the last few days. I took a load of hats across yesterday to hand out to the people in the Colonia around Mision Bautista. We have been handing out blankets for a while and are praying that the Lord will keep the people protected in these frigid temps. As I drove across with the kids, I was brought to tears again as I thought about the conditions that so many people live in each day. Whether it be extreme cold or heat or lack of food or water. It's heartbreaking to see so many people that have need. So as I sit comfortably in my home on a cold night - I am moved again by the Spirit to offer up prayers of gratitude. Thank you Lord for Your many blessings. Thank you for blessing us so richly that we in turn may reach out to the world around us with Your love. Blessings to each one reading.

We have a couple requests to bring before you:

We have a friend who has had a ministry in Mexico for many years. We have had the privilege of serving alongside him. He is in the hospital right now with his kidneys only functioning at 16%. We do know that he suffers from diabetes. We don't know many other details, but we would really appreciate your prayers for he and his family. His condition is very serious.

Also, we found out that our oldest son, Clay, has a defect in his jaw. This was discovered during an oral examination. The defect is so bad that if left untreated, it could cause major damage. The normal treatment for this defect would be major oral surgery. This would be both painful and expensive. We found a doctor that is hopeful that she can construct an "oral appliance" that when combined with braces - would correct the defect. He went today and had his top set of braces put on....they will construct the appliance over the next month or so. After it is installed, he will have it adjusted each day for 7 days in hopes to adjust the jaw. He will then be fitted with another appliance that will go on the bottom jaw. This process will take one year. Hopefully, at that point the defect will be corrected and he will get the braces on the bottom teeth. Please be in prayer for Clay. This process looks to be a painful one, but better than the alternative of surgery.

"The Lines are OPEN"

Do you remember the tv advertisements that would end with "Call now...the lines are open and operators are standing by.." They made it seem as though you had to call right then - otherwise you wouldn't get through. If you waited too long, no one would be there to take your call.

Aren't you glad that our Heavenly Father doesn't work that way?? Isn't it comforting to know that there is never a time that isn't "good" for Him? We are able to come to Him with anything and He will hear us. He is never "busy with another guest" or "on another line". We have an open line with Him. When our hearts are rejoicing or when they are breaking - we can tell Him. When we have plenty or when we have need - we can tell Him. I can talk to Him about anything. I find much comfort in knowing that. How about you?

"Don't worry about anything. Instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank Him for all that He has done. If you do this, you will experience God's peace." Phil. 4:6-7 (NLT)

The work is continuing on the church in Rio Bravo. We look to dedicate the building at the beginning of April. There is still much to be done. We are praising God for sending a few men to help Scott. One man is a missionary we met a few months ago. He has a children's program in Reynosa. He and a friend of his are helping Scott when they are able. Scott was also offered help from a man at our church - who is in his 70s -but has a heart to serve. We praise God for sending us these helpers. Many hands make the work go faster and not only lighten the load, but lighten our hearts as well. Our kids are back to school after the holiday break and are working hard. Scott's dad came for a few days for a visit. It was a very sweet time for which we are so thankful.

It's hard to believe that another year has come to an end. The months seem to fly by so quickly. This year has been filled with much joy but also shadowed with sadness at different points, but one this has always remained true..... God has never left our side. We have encountered hardships with health, finances, and personal loss .... but we never walked those roads alone. We are so thankful for our Father who loves us so much!!
We look back over the past year with much gratitude for God's protection during the times of violence. We are also grateful for each of you that come alongside us and support us with your prayers and/or finances. We are thankful to be taking this journey with you.
We look forward with great expectation to what the Lord has planned for our family in the coming year. We are excited to see all that He will do in the lives of the people of Mexico this year. We know that He has BIG things planned!!
May God bless each of you greatly in this new year!! May you remember that when your road is a bit bumpy and the path seems unclear - your loving Savior is ALWAYS near!!

A Truly Merry Christmas!!

Last week was a very busy week here. Scott arrived home from his mom's memorial service on Monday afternoon and was across the border Monday night visiting a Pastor and helping another missionary with a project. On Tuesday, we attended a Christmas Celebration service at a church in Reynosa. It was a wonderful evening of singing, preaching, and of course food!! The tamales were UNBELIEVABLE!! We had the opportunity to hand out several of the Christmas Bags that were generously provided for by many of you. Just that evening alone more than 100 people received food, blankets, and many necessities. They were so thankful. On Wednesday, Scott delivered bins of cookies (that the kids & I had made) to the group homes at the orphanage where we used to teach. Scott received a warm welcome from our friends. On Thursday, we celebrated Pastor Francisco's birthday. Not only did we take a gift for him across, but we also took some small gifts and supplies for his family for Christmas. It was alot of fun watching his little ones open their gifts and sit and play with my kids on the floor. On Friday, we had a early dinner with our friends Bruce and Paula (other missionaries) before heading to our church for a Christmas Eve service. It was our kids first time in the new sanctuary - so they were very excited. It was such a wonderful service. On Saturday, we spent Christmas at home. We played games, played outside, and then watched a movie. The kids said "It was the best Christmas yet". It made us happy to see them happy.
We want to thank each one of you who sent Christmas gifts down to us. Your generosity allowed us to make this Christmas not only very special for our children, but very special for those whom we serve. Our hearts are filled with so much gratitude - that thank you just doesn't seem to be enough, but for now it will have to do. We pray that God will bless each of you greatly for your generosity.

Christmas Celebration

Last Saturday was the Christmas party for the children at Good Samaritan Church. More than 40 children came to participate in the festivities of that day. There was singing, playing games, making crafts, message time, and of course eating. We made sure that there was enough food for each one of the children (& their parents) to leave the party feeling "full". The people in this area do not have much food, if any, to eat each day. When they do eat - it is to take the hunger away temporarily - but never enough to make them feel full.
I think I take for granted that I can just open my pantry or my fridge and grab something when I'm hungry - or even when I'm really not. I don't know what it would feel like to go a day not knowing how I'll be able to feed my children. I know that I am blessed and I praise God for His continued provision for our family and for our many friends in Mexico. I never cease to be amazed at how much I learn from the people we serve. I am so thankful for the opportunities.
We want to thank the youth from Family of God Church in Minnesota for helping assemble gift bags and for providing funds to purchase the items necessary for this party. You showed these children the true meaning for the season - Christ. Your generosity not only touched our hearts, but the hearts of each of the people who came to the party. THANK YOU!!

In memory of Grandma Kincaid

On Dec. 9, 2010, Scott's mom (Fran) went home to be with our Saviour. She was a truly incredible woman. Although we feel a great sense of loss right now, we are rejoicing that Fran is no longer in pain. We want to thank each one of you who have been praying for Fran and our family for these past several years.
Scott will be leaving for Florida tomorrow for the memorial service on Sunday. This will be a difficult time for him and the rest of the family. This has also been very difficult for our children. There was no way that we could prepare them for experiencing this type of loss. It has been very hard. We want to share with you something that our kids did to help work through their hurt. We just returned home from New Braunfels, TX which is about 4 hours North of where we live. We have spent the last several days there with some friends that moved from Chicago to TX last summer. The wife has been going through many health issues over the past few months. She has problems with bulging discs in her neck and recently began having issues with her heart. She has now started some meds and is trying to take it easy at home when she is able. The meds seem to be helping the heart issue, but she is still being seen about possible surgery for her neck. Our time there was sweet. They have children around the same ages as our kids -- so it was nice for them all to be able to be together. The grown ups enjoyed spending time together too!! We are very thankful for our time away and would appreciate your continued prayers for my friend's health concerns.

Scott's mom has been made comfortable on morphine and the doctor does not think her time remaining on this earth will be very long. Please be in prayer for the family during this time.

Work will resume at Mision Bautista this week. The goal is to continue the texturing of the block walls, framing of the Pastor's home and starting of sheetrock. We are praying that we may be able to have the windows and doors installed within the next few weeks. The work was put on hold because of the lack of help for Scott, but Chuy and Ruben will be back with him this week!! We are excited to see all that will be accomplished.

Our church in Texas is at the end of a building project and they asked Scott if he could assist in completing a few final projects. One of the projects allowed our family to work together as a team to complete the work. It was alot of hard work, but there's just something about working together that is so much fun. Even our little 6 year old was showing off his "drill skills". Scott will be there again this week. One day last week, he was able to help put a new roof on at an orphanage in Reynosa. Work at Mision Bautista will continue after Thanksgiving.
We are getting all the supplies needed to host two outreaches for Christmas in Mexico. The children there are already so excited!! We are also collecting donations for our "Christmas Bags for Mexico" outreach. If you would like more info, please email us at mail@borderofhope.org.
Scott's mom hasn't been doing very well the last couple weeks. Her pain is getting more difficult to manage. She is now requiring oxygen consistently. Dad also said that her mind isn't quite right anymore. He isn't sure if it is from the medications or the cancer. He doesn't feel comfortable leaving her because he is fearful she will hurt herself somehow. The doctor has recommended that she be placed into a nursing home, but Scott's dad doesn't want to do that. Please pray for Fran during this time - that the Lord will grant her freedom from this pain either on this earth or in His presence. Please hold the whole family in your prayers.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

We can't believe that we have been here three years as of October. The time has gone by so quickly. As we look back over our time here, it is exciting to see all that the Lord has done in and through us. We came here anticipating that we might be able to change lives...little did we know that it would be our lives that would be forever changed. God has worked in each of our lives in numerous ways. We have learned so much about ourselves and even more about Him. God has shown Himself clearly to us many times. It's so exciting to be able to share these experiences with our children and be able to tell them that there is no explanation except God! This has been a wonderful opportunity. We have met so many adults and even more children from all throughout Mexico. One little boy comes to mind right now. He lives near Good Samaritan Church with his father and is about 8 years old. One day, he came to the church and was begging for milk. This was something he didn't have to drink at home. If he was thirsty, his only option was beer - which he was known for drinking. This broke my heart. He didn't have water, milk, or juice - all three things most of us have in our fridges. He longed for milk. Scott went the next morning and provided the Pastor's wife with many boxes of "stable" milk for her to distribute to this little boy and others in need.
We want to thank each of you that give monthly to support the ministry here. We could not have helped this little boy and countless others or do anything else we do without you. We are extremely grateful for your sacrificial gifts. We also want to thank each of you who faithfully pray for our family and ministry. With health concerns, financial needs, and border violence being heavy on our hearts- your prayers have carried us through many days.

A few weeks ago, after talking with Pastor Francisco & Lulu, we found out they were expecting leadership and youth from 16 churches from throughout Reynosa to converge on Good Samaritan Church for a weekend conference. We put the work at Mision Bautista on hold for a couple weeks and began finishing some projects at Good Samaritan. We were able to install the rest of the lights and paint the remaining walls in the Sanctuary, touch up paint on the benches, sand/prime/paint the hallway off the classrooms and install light fixtures in the hallway as well. Good Samaritan Church was now ready to welcome all 100+ guests. Praise God for a wonderful weekend. While working at the church, we came to find out that a dear friend of Francisco - Pastor Tomas - had been admitted into the hospital because of complications from his diabetes which was just diagnosed last year. He asked us to pray because Tomas was extremely weak and was told he would require dialysis. Otherwise, his life expectancy would be only about 3 months. A couple days later, we were told that if Tomas didn't have the equivalent of $500 that he would be discharged from the hospital. We prayed about what we should do and tried to seek help to meet this need. We felt the Holy Spirit leading us to give the hospital the money necessary for his continued treatment - so we did. We are thankful that God has provided the replacement of some of these funds from 2 separate sources. We are praying that God will heal his body, but if it is not His will - then we will trust He will provide the funds necessary for Tomas' treatments. We are also praying that many lives will be touched by Tomas' testimony - even during this difficult time.

Work update

Over the past few weeks, the church in Rio Bravo has been transformed. The inside and outside texture on the block walls is complete and the second floor is starting to be framed out. The second floor will be the home for Pastor Alfredo and his family.
We are also excited that we found another couple serving in Reynosa that we have been able to come alongside. They are a ministry that strictly reaches out to the children in their area. They had a need for some projects to be completed at their home and ministry site. So, Scott has been going over there usually one day a week and helping them out.
Today, the kids and I will be heading over the visit with Pastor Francisco and Lulu. We enjoy spending time with them and the girls. We share a meal, talk, play with the kids, and pray. We hope that today we can set a date for the Christmas outreach this year.
My health remains the same. Some days are more painful than others. We are continually praying for God's healing and would appreciate the same from each of you.
Scott celebrated his birthday this past week. We are so thankful for the way he cares for our family - as well as the countless others in Mexico he serves each day.

Prayer Request

As many of you have seen, the story of David and Tiffany Hartley has made nationwide news. David's tragic death and the near escape of Tiffany have left so many people with so many questions. It is so hard in our "human-ness" to understand how such a thing could have happened to anyone - let alone a fellow Christ follower. My mind has whirled with questions over these last few days - and only one answer is clear. GOD IS IN CONTROL. My heart breaks for Tiffany and her family - I pray that they will be able to locate his body so that they can say their goodbyes and have the necessary closure. We will be attending the memorial service for David this evening at 7pm. We would really appreciate your prayers for Tiffany and the family during this difficult time.
As many of you also know, just a couple weeks ago, I was faced with the sudden death of my cousin Carrie. Many of the same questions flooded my mind - and only one answer was clear. GOD IS IN CONTROL.
Then, a few weeks before that, I was faced with more mounting health issues. My mind was filled with many "what ifs". The more I prayed - one answer was clear. GOD IS IN CONTROL.
It's difficult to comprehend at times how so many things can "go wrong" at once. But the one thing I am confident of is that He is with me through it all - and for that I am SO thankful.

As I write this, I long to encourage you that whatever your circumstances may be at the present time...no matter how dark your day has become...no matter how alone you may feel...no matter how many questions fill your mind today...rest in this ALONE -- GOD IS IN CONTROL. There is nothing too big for Him to handle...there is no heart too broken for Him to mend...there is NO circumstance at all that He cannot deal with. So if your heart is heavy and you feel as though you cannot even stand ... fall into His loving arms today and let Him wrap His arms around you and carry you through. Don't try to carry it all on your shoulders - you're not able - BUT HE IS. May you each feel His love surrounding today.

So Close To Home

A couple of years ago we had the pleasure of meeting David and Tiffany while they were visiting the orphanage we were serving at in Reynosa. Later Tiffany began helping with tutoring for the Director's daughter. We talked several times and she was such a sweet girl. She and her husband had moved here for his job from Colorado a couple years ago. When I saw her a couple of months ago, she told me how they had moved back into Texas because of the ongoing violence in Mexico. Sadly, this morning we came to find out that they had become the latest victims to the ongoing battles across the border. The couple had been jet skiing near Falcon Dam yesterday (around 2:45pm)and were on the Mexican side when they were quickly approached by Mexican men in 2 boats. The couple tried to flee - when David (age 30) was shot. Tiffany circled back to try to pull him onto her jet ski, but she was still under fire. She fled back to the US side to the closest residence she could find to get help. The men in at least one of the boats followed her back onto the US side before fleeing. We are so thankful that she escaped unharmed physically, but we know that the injuries she sustained in other ways will be difficult to recover from. The US and MX authorities tried to locate his body but at 9:00pm called off the search. We don't know any other information right now, but would really appreciate all of your prayers.
This tragedy strikes so close to home for our family. Each day as Scott goes across, we pray and trust that the Lord will bring him back to us after his work is done. We pray that Scott is never caught in the "wrong place at the wrong time". We pray that he is invisible to the dangerous world around him. We would appreciate your prayers for his continued safety each day as well.

As many of you know, my (Lisa) cousin Carrie - age 31 - died at the beginning of last week. She died very suddenly and left behind 3 young boys and a husband. On Wednesday, I flew to NC to meet up with my sister Stacy. We left for Chicago directly from there and arrived in the afternoon on Thursday. The next days were filled with time spent attending the wake, etc. So many people attended the services - she had truly touched so many lives. My sisters and I were able to connect with family members and hear stories about our mom and others from our family that we hadn't heard before. It was a sweet time. Please continue to hold Mike and the boys in your prayers as well as my Aunt Toni and Uncle Ed. The road before them is a difficult one and I know they would appreciate your prayers. We left Chicago on Monday at 4:00am and drove through to SC. I stayed there overnight and then flew out of Columbia, SC on Tuesday afternoon to arrive home in TX around 10:30pm. Needless to say, all that travelling has left my body not feeling the greatest. Today will be a day of rest.
Before I left, Scott & Gabriel had completed the roof - which proved to be quite challenging because of the height and pitch. We are so thankful for God's continued protection during this build. Scott returned to work in MX yesterday. He had to put everything on hold while I was gone. Scott, Jesus, and Ruben are working on the inside coating of the block walls on the 2nd floor so that the men can continue with the remaining projects (stud walls, drywall, etc,). Pastor Alfredo and his family have been using the building - both floors - each Sunday for weeks. It has been such a blessing to them to have a place for their family to reach out to the community around them.
Much is happening here and we are so thankful to each of you that are helping to make it possible - either by your prayers or your financial support. It's so exciting to see all that the Lord is doing. So we say again ..... THANK YOU!!

Shortly after returning from FL we found out that Gabriel (father of Gerardo/husband of Minerva) had lost his job. He worked in a restaurant near the colonia where they live. He would work many long hours and not receive much pay. It all depended on how many people came into the restaurant that day. Recently, the violence came into that area. With gunshots ringing out -- no one really goes out much unless absolutely necessary. They especially don't go to sit and eat at a restaurant. With no business came no job. We began to pray that the Lord would open up a position for him somewhere. His family needed the income so desperately. A few days later, we received a call asking us to come and see them -- they needed to talk. While Scott worked at the church in Rio Bravo - I went into Reynosa and met with Minerva and Gabriel. He asked if Scott might be able to use him. He would work as little or as much as we needed. My heart was so happy. Scott has been working so hard on the church and help is sometimes unavailable. Pastor Alfredo helps him as much as he can, our oldest son goes and helps, but Scott really needed someone there regularly to help. This was such a blessing!! Out of a difficult situation not only were we able to bless this family with a source of income, but we were being blessed by Gabriel's willing heart to work alongside Scott. Today is the second work day for Scott and Gabriel. Already he has been such a blessing to Scott at the site. We are praising God for the newest member of the BOH team!!

It's been quite a while since our last update and much has happened. The work at Mision Bautista Berea in Rio Bravo, Mexico is continuing to go well. The men installed the last of the roof trusses today and began installing the plywood.

We just returned from a quick visit to Florida so that Scott's mom could see the children. She was in good spirits and seemed to be doing fairly well considering the situation. She is on oxygen several times a day and on meds to manage her pain. We took the kids to the beach one afternoon -- and they had a blast.

Before we left, I went to visit some friends in a colonia where we serve and came to find out that they had been without water now for over 1 month. ONE MONTH!! NO WATER!! No local well, no access to the river or canal. Simply no water!! The only way that they could have water was to pay to get jugs filled. I gave the Pastor the money that I had to assist them with the purchase of water for themselves and the people of the church, but we are in need of more help. The amount of rain that we have received over the past several weeks is staggering. It left many roads in Texas closed - which made getting to our home difficult at times. The affects that it had on the people in Mexico is far worse. The pictures were shot from the Anzalduas Bridge entering into MX. This was several days after the rain and some of the waters had already receded. The devastation is so widespread. So many people have lost so much. The needs are SO great. Scott went to visit his parents in FL for several days. He enjoyed spending the time with his mom and helping his dad complete various projects around the house. Mom was in good spirits during the visit, but was in quite a bit of pain. They came and adjusted her meds - in an attempt to make her more comfortable. Please continue to pray.

I went to meet with a good friend in Reynosa this week. She found out that her cancer was back and that the doctors are trying to find some course of treatment. She is very scared and has found it hard to share this news with her family. Please be in prayer for she and her family during this difficult time.

The past few weeks have been very busy for Scott. He and the men have completed the walls of the second story of Mision Bautista. The next step will be the roof. We are praying that God will send some willing hands to help with this part of the project. We again are so speechless at the way the Lord has provided the funds for this building. It is already being used by God to reach out to the world around. So exciting.
On a different note, yesterday we received word that Scott's mom (Fran) was going to begin hospice care after being discharged from the hospital. She was admitted into the hospital on Monday night complaining of "pain in her lung". They immediately began treatment for a blood clot while they began testing to find the source of the problem. They said there were no clots, but that her cancer was what was causing the pain. They feel that her time on this earth will only be a matter of months at best. Our hearts are heavy to think of this world without her, but we rejoice that she will be in the presence of the God we serve. We would appreciate your continued prayers for the whole family during this time, and also for the salvation of Scott's dad and brother. The news of Fran has been difficult for us all, but especially our children. We are trying to plan a trip to FL, but are unsure of exactly when to go. I (Lisa) have been sick on and off for the past month and am unsure of being able to make such a long journey. Please pray for complete healing. We are so thankful for the faithful prayers of each of you. We love y'all.

Hurricane Alex arrived earlier this week and with it came A LOT of rain. The eye of the storm hit Mexico and not Texas. This storm actually gave us more rain than Hurricane Dolly a couple years ago. We are praising God for his protection of our family and of all our friends in Mexico.
Yesterday we heard that many people had fled from the coastal areas in Mexico further inland to avoid the hurricane. One of the areas was Laguna Madre...they traveled in about 25 miles to San Fernando, MX. Many of these people left everything behind and fled with only the clothes on their backs. We felt the Lord leading us to go to San Fernando with supplies. Today, Scott, our friend Raul, and Pastor Francisco took a van load of clothes, shoes, Bibles, rice, beans, milk, diapers, etc. to San Fernando - which is just over 100 miles South of Reynosa. They weren't exactly sure where to go upon arrival, but the Lord lead them to a business that had two Christian men. They were both from two area churches and joined Scott in the van to take them to meet their Pastors. Scott explained why they were there and the Pastor shared that the displaced people had already begun the track back to the coastal villages. One of the Pastor's is affiliated with three churches in Laguna Madre and will be personally making sure the people who need these items - get them. Scott had a wonderful time visiting and praying with these Pastors and meeting some of the people from the churches. We will be in touch with the Pastors over the next several weeks to find out the condition of the churches in Laguna Madre and see if they might need any further assistance.
We were planning a trip to Chicago - and were supposed to be there right now. But, circumstances changed that prevented us from making such a trip. We had a wedding to attend, planned visits in IL and MN, and were looking forward to visiting with our friends and family. We were very disappointed when the trip fell through. Now, we realize that we wouldn't have been able to reach out to MX today...if we weren't here. It's nothing short of a Divine appointment. We are praising God for the opportunity to go into another area of Mexico to show His love. Thank you to those of you who contributed to the supplies. We are so thankful. Blessings to each one.

Last week the work continued on the second floor of Mision Bautista Berea. On Wednesday, the men had just completed the rear wall of the building when the unexpected happened. Scott and the men had walked away to mix the concrete to pour into the blocks on the wall and what felt like a microburst hit them. They turned around when they heard the rumble just in time to watch the rear wall finish tumbling down. We were so thankful that no one was hurt. Children were playing just below the area earlier in the day and Scott and Ruben had walked away from the area just minutes before. Although it was discouraging to watch so much work destroyed, it could all be rebuilt...we were rejoicing that everyone was injury free. Thursday the men rebuilt the wall, Friday Scott worked on a project at our church and then Saturday the men completed the front wall of Mision Bautista. Pastor Alfredo and his family are so very excited at the progress of the new building. Two weekends ago, the church held their first services in their new building. The people rejoiced at God's provision. We are so thankful to be a part of this project.

Our children are doing well. Enjoying the warm weather...when they're in the pool that is!! Ally is participating in a summer internship program at our church. They meet twice a week through June and July. She is having such a good time and is learning to much each session. We're thankful she has this opportunity. The younger ones are enjoying playing games, playing on the Wii, or playing with the dogs. Last week we celebrated Clay's 12th birthday. My how the time has flown by.

Change the World

Yesterday, we were challenged by our Pastor to reach out to the world around us. Sometimes people may get overwhelmed when they see all the needs out there and feel that the difference they can make would be too small. That what they had to give just wouldn't be enough. We know from Scripture that God sees a gift given from a pure heart as a truly wonderful offering. As I look at the ministry the Lord has given to us in Reynosa...I have to stop an think. What we are doing is so small compared to what truly needs to be done. But then I realized...we may not be able to change the whole world, but we can change the world for one person. Many of you reading this are also changing the world. By your financial and prayer support, you are touching lives across the border. Just last week, a teenage group from MN had a missions focused week. They assembled toiletry kits, blankets, and diaper kits for the needy people in Reynosa. They also collected change for stable milk for many families as well. Because of their generosity...many lives will be touched. They didn't worry that their gifts would be too small, they just wanted to give all they could to make a difference. Praise God!! So, we pass on to you the challenge of Pastor Rick. Reach out to the world around you and make a difference. It could be in a different country or as close as your next door neighbor. The point is to give of the gifts the Father has given to you. Are you willing? You CAN change someone's world!

Much has happened since our last posting. The second story floor at Mision Bautista has been poured. We had a friend from Minnesota come and spend a few days with us. The fellowship was very sweet. I especially enjoyed the "girl time". We were able to take her across and show her the progress on the church - which she had seen the footings for on her visit in March. Much has been accomplished and she was rejoicing with us.
Sunday night, I travelled to San Antonio and stayed at the home of a friend I connected with on Facebook. He attended the same school as my sisters and I. He and his wonderful wife welcomed me into their home for the evening. It was so much fun to catch up with them and to learn more about them as well. On Monday, I went house hunting with a friend from Chicago who is relocating to the San Antonio area. We had a lot of fun looking at houses and enjoyed the time together. It had been a couple years since our last visit - so we made the most of it. I made it home late Monday night. Scott stayed home with the kids and did some outside work on the house. Fierce storms rolled in on Monday night which made it impossible to work in Mexico yesterday. Today he is at Good Samaritan, tomorrow will be driving a bus for a church outing, and then Friday will resume work on Mision Bautista.
Our children are doing well. The older two are working on finishing up school in the next few weeks and hoping for a short break. Clay's birthday is next week and then Ally's is a month after that -- my how the time has gone by. Seems like just yesterday they were both sitting in high chairs!!

Scott and the men continued preparing Mision Bautista for the second story floor. The placement of the forms takes quite a bit of time. The increasing temps make the work a bit more difficult as well. Much is being accomplished. Our children don't seem to mind the heat--especially since they convinced their daddy to get them a little pool. They enjoy splashing around after they're done with their studies. Will definitely come in handy when those 100+ days stick around for a while.
Scott's mom, Fran, received the results back from her latest scan. They said that the treatment she has been on has not been effective enough on her cancer. They are deciding between trying one final new treatment or suspending treatments entirely. We would appreciate your continued prayers.
Yesterday, Scott had our van break down on his way out of Rio Bravo. He called and said he was on the side of the road awaiting some help from a friend of Jesus (one of our Mexican helpers). Right away the kids and I sat and prayed for his safe return home. The unpredictable violence in Reynosa at times left us quite concerned, but we had to give it over to God. I have to admit, I found it difficult to even put words together to pray. That's when I was so thankful to remember that my Lord knows my heart - even when no words come out my mouth. Thankfully the men were able to get the van running again and Scott arrived home a couple hours later. We were so thankful to hear the door open. We were so thankful for God's returning Scott back to us safely. Thank you to those of you who prayed with me during the waiting. Our Pastor from our home church in Chicago used to speak of NEEG experiences. (No Explanation Except God) These are the type of experiences we see so often in the ministry here. We never cease to be amazed at the mighty hand of the God we serve. We pray that today you may see His hand clearly in your life and that you will immediately stop and give Him the praise. The work at Mision Bautista Berea continued this week. The men completed the four walls and will begin this week to prepare the building for the 2nd story floor. We attended The Day of the Child celebration at Good Samaritan Church. It was alot of fun. We played games, ate dinner, and beat the pinata!! Many children came and the smiles were contagious. It was a great day! Lulu was very excited to show us their new bedroom, complete with furniture. She was so very thankful for her new room. It looked beautiful and so did her smile when she took us in!! Thanks to everyone who helped make this possible.
Then, they told us how they were on the third day of no water. With the 90+ degree days we have had this past week - the lack of water is even more difficult. It broke my heart as I stood there and heard of this need. It is then I realized how often I take for granted simply turning on the faucet or flushing the toilet. The more we serve the people in Reynosa, the more we learn how very rich we are. Maybe not according to the American "standard", but compared to our friends in Mexico -- we are RICH! (2 Cor. 9:6-15)This is when we praise the Lord for all the ways that He has provided for us. All the ways He has made it possible for us to touch so many lives in Reynosa and Rio Bravo. All the ways we are able to reach out with the love of our Savior. He makes it possible through each person who comes alongside us with prayers or financial support. Thank you to each one of you who has a part of our ministry. You are making such a difference in our lives and the lives of countless others.

We are so excited to share that Pastor Francisco & Lulu's beautiful room addition is ready to have the furniture moved in!! Thank you to all the people who helped to make this project possible. Each one of you that sends monthly support has a part of this project. We also want to thank the group from Minnesota that came down in March. Not only did they provide the remaining funds needed for the project, but they also accomplished so much of the work on their trip. The "-ings" have it!!

Pastor Alfredo and his family have been experiencing many "ings" regarding a church building. First there was "needing", "praying", "planning", and then came the "waiting" for six years after the initial purchase of the land. Right now they are in a different phase. They are "building" and "rejoicing". They look forward to the day when they will be "using" their new church building. This week was a very busy work week. Scott and the men were able to ready the site for the concrete floor and then even completed three of the four main level walls. God used these men in a mighty way to accomplish so much. Josue, Pastor Alfredo's son and our friend, was even there to help with some of the work. It was good to be with his family. The second floor will now be built as a home for Pastor Alfredo and his family. This will allow them the ability to be accessible to the people of the Colonia as well as free them from the burden of paying a monthly high rent. We are so excited. We are continuing to see God's hand working in this project and in others as well. This week we presented a financial need for a family and within one hour the need was met. We were speechless. We never cease to be in awe of God's awesomeness. We praise Him for all that He has done and continues to do. We thank you for your continued prayers. Blessings to each one. We wanted to share the news of the newest addition to the Border of Hope Family. Gerardo and his wife Tacero welcomed their baby girl, Minerva Catalina, into the world on Friday. This once student of ours is now a hubby and a daddy. Unbelievable. We can't tell you how much of a blessing Gerardo has been to our ministry in Reynosa. Since last Fall, he has faithfully worked alongside Scott each day - the only days he missed were for the birth of his daughter!! Scott has had so much fun teaching the skills that he knows to Gerardo - who is always willing to try whatever he is asked to do. He is such a hard worker. We are so thankful that God has brought he and his family into our lives. Gerardo is one of the three men that we are able to help with work right now - so they can provide for their families. Without these men - the work in Reynosa would be so much slower. We are very thankful for the many hands that are an active part of this ministry.
Please pray for Gerardo and Tacero as they begin this new journey of parenthood. Pray that God will bless their family greatly in the years ahead.

VOICES OF PRAISE

Did you hear the praises in the wind a few days ago?? Surely you must have. Those were the voices of our family when we received a wonderful package in the mail. You see, the dear friend that we told you about a few weeks ago contacted us again and asked how much money we still needed to complete the Mision Bautista Berea church in Rio Bravo that we had just began. They said that God had laid it on their heart to bless us with the funds to COMPLETE the entire building!! We again were speechless. We couldn't believe it! God was providing for the ENTIRE project -- one that we started simply on faith. We received the package with the check a few days ago and our friend even sent extra money for our monthly personal expenses. I think even our friends and family across the country must have heard of prayers and praise and our tears of joy!! What an awesome gift!! We have no other explanation for any of it - except to say that it is ALL FROM GOD!! He continues to show Himself to us and our ministry week after week - and our reaction is always the same -- SPEECHLESS!!
Another HUGE praise is that we received the final notification letter from the IRS that we are OFFICIALLY a 501c3 non profit!! YEAH!! That was quite the difficult and long process, but we are so very glad that it went as well as it did. PRAISE GOD!! We truly have so very much to be thankful for....God has done so many HUGE things in this ministry. We are so blessed to be able to be a part of it!! Thank you for your prayers and financial support. We are so thankful to each one of you. That is why we wanted to post this -- we wanted to share our joy with you. More again soon. Blessings to y'all. MANY HANDS ACCOMPLISH GREAT THINGS

Last week a church group came all the way from Minnesota to serve alongside us at Good Samaritan Church in Reynosa, Mexico. This was the first group of Americans that had come to serve in this area. The group was 3 women and 5 teenage girls. They worked so hard and accomplished even more than we had originally planned. Scott taught some of the team how to install insulation and drywall in the room addition - while some painted the ceiling in the church -- the rest (along with some of the neighborhood children) painted church benches. They worked so hard -- even in the heat!! Each day children from the colonia would come to help or simply play with us at the church. They were so very happy for the "Americans". The group purchased food for many families around the church as well as a water dispenser for the Church. Their generosity left us speechless. As the van went to leave the last day -- the children linked their arms and blocked the gate. They didn't want the team to leave. This group of 8 truly touched the lives of so many -- Pastor Francisco and his family, the people from the church & community, as well as this missionary family.
We were so privileged to have this group spend the week with us. When they left--we cried. We cried tears of sorrow, because we were so sad to see our new friends leave -- tears of joy, because of all the work they had accomplished and how God had used them--and tears of hope, because we are trusting this will be the beginning of more people coming to give themselves away to make a difference in lives of so many. We look forward to seeing this group again soon and continuing on with the work that they have already started.
We give God all the glory for the many ways He continues to move.

Update - Mision Bautista Berea Project Begins

We have been blessed to accomplish many things throughout Reynosa, but this past week we expanded our newest project into nearby Rio Bravo, Mexico. We first came in contact with the Tovar family when we worked alongside them at the orphanage last year. We learned that their family had a church in Rio Bravo, but were meeting on their land or in vehicles because they did not have a church building. Over the past year, God laid it on our hearts that we were to come alongside this family and help to build their church building. Several weeks ago, Scott met with our friend Josue and was introduced to his father (Pastor Alfredo) and the rest of his family. He then told them what God had been leading us to do -- and told them when they could expect construction to begin. We were unsure where the money for the build would come from, but we were confident that this is what God had for us to do. Last week we opened our mail and were amazed at what we found. A dear friend of ours sent us a check that would be enough to cover the cost of the walls and the concrete floor!! PRAISE GOD!! We were brought to tears and immediately offered prayers of thanksgiving to God for providing in such a HUGE way. We then called our friend and explained what a BLESSING they had been and how the money was going to be used. This was an example again of how God continues to show Himself to us. We as adults were amazed, but our children were speechless. They heard us pray for this need and to see God meet it was nothing short of a miracle.
The building was started on Friday (see pics above)and will continue as time, finances, and weather allows. We, and the Tovar family, are praising God for this newest project and His faithfulness to both of our families.

So sorry for the lapse in entries over the past couple of weeks. My health has been taking much of the focus lately. The medicine I have been taking for a couple weeks has seemed to help -- so we are hopeful. We would appreciate your continued prayers.

The work in Mexico has been continuing. Scott & Gerardo have been working hard on Pastor Francisco's addition and continued church projects. Last week we built some benches for Apicentro Alto Iglesia in a nearby Colonia. God continues to show much need everywhere we look. We are so excited for a group from MN to be coming in just a few weeks to help us with this important work.

Would appreciate your continued prayers for Scott's mom, Fran, she has discontinued chemo treatments and is praying that her cancer doesn't progress too rapidly. Please pray for her health as well as the salvation of family members.

Last week the rain held off enough for Scott and Gerardo to get more of the exterior addition at Pastor Francisco's done. They were joined by Jesus, Lulu's brother, for the week - who ended up being a HUGE help. Scott is hopeful that he will be able to work with him more in the future. On Wednesday, we were able to take out a load of tomatoes, cabbage, and other goodies out to the orphanage (Pilar de Esperanza). The adults and children are always so thankful when they see the big red van pull in. We also give some of the food to Good Samaritan Church to distribute. Thursday, Scott had one family prepare he and the guys lunch and in the stew used some of the fresh broccoli Scott had brought -- he ate it and raved about how good it was. Not sure if he ever liked mine that much. :)
On Monday, Scott went and visited the home above - that was destroyed by fire. We were contacted by a friend in the US to see if we could coordinate the rebuild of this home for the Nunez family. An organization from the US is trying to raise the funds for the rebuild. We will keep you posted. Until then, please pray for this family during this difficult time. They lost everything they had in the fire, but their family is safe.
Thank you all for your continued prayers for my health. I have sought medical advice and have started some medication and am regularly monitoring my levels to see if these two things could be the cause of the episodes I have been having. This started before Christmas and has been quite a challenge to deal with. I am ready to be feeling better and to be able to resume my normal activity level. Because of my inability to drive and physical discomfort - we have had to cancel our plans to attend the Missions Conference in February at our home church in Chicago. We had been looking forward to the trip and to the fellowship with our friends and family. Although discouraging to us - we know that God has a plan for it and we will rest in that fact. Please continue to pray. It may be at least another week for the meds to have full affect.

Last week was a week filled with much paperwork. As the year ends - there is much to do. Scott stayed on this side to help with some of that and for some appointments. Went across on Wednesday to take some food to POH orphanage. This week there was much to take. It was so exciting to haul in loads of fresh fruits and veggies. They were blessed with cabbage, lettuce, papaya, oranges, bread, & tortillas. Thank you Lord for providing for these children.
We were hit with some very cold weather last week. The temps dropped below freezing for a couple nights in a row. Now to people like you and I that may not seem very bad, but to our friends in Mexico - those temps could be unbearable. Many live in homes or structures that leave them exposed to the elements. We gave a small heater and blankets for the babies to Pastor Francisco to try to help keep his family warm in the cold weather. They told Scott yesterday how much it helped. Then they shared how Lulu's sister's family was so cold that they lit some charcoal briquettes and brought them inside to try to stay warm. After a while the daughter woke up with a bad headache - then the mom too - so the dad thought it might be from the charcoal. He went to take it outside and then he collapsed. All of the family is ok now, but it could have ended badly if the daughter would not have woke up. Praise God for his protection over this dear family.
Scott's mom had a scan recently and the doctors found that her cancer is continuing to slowly spread - so she has opted to discontinue chemo treatments. She still receives 2 shots of different meds every two weeks - but no more chemo. Please pray that the cancer will continue to be slow growing and that she will be more comfortable now that the chemo is done. Please continue to pray for Scott's family during this time - that those who do not know the Lord may come to know Him.

Last Monday we started to prepare the roof of the Alpha and Omega Mission Church for the conrete. The roof was completed and on Wednesday Scott took a load of fresh fruit and 27 gallons of stable milk to the orphanage. They were very happy to receive these items!! The rest of the week was spent doing things around the house and hanging out with the kids. I (Lisa) still haven't been feeling the best and would appreciate your continued prayers. I am resting in the fact that God is in control. We were able to see some familiar faces from Chicago on Sunday night who were here on a short term trip with another ministry. It was nice to visit with them. We pray that each of you had a wonderful holiday season and that you are staying healthy and strong. May God bless each one of you. More later.

Last week we began the construction on the addition to Pastor Francisco's house. This wasn't a "need" that they had shared with us -- it is one that we saw as obvious. They have a two room house -- the bedroom they share with their 3 little girls. With the cribs and lack of storage - there really isn't much room to even turn around. Scott had the help of our good friend Cruz, Gerardo, and a man from the church. The weather was beautiful this week and the framing was complete by Wednesday. The project will be completed at the beginning of March when some extra help arrives.
We trust that each of you had a wonderful Christmas. We spent a quiet day at home because I (Lisa) wasn't feeling well. We had a delicious dinner and spent the day hanging out with the kids. In the evening, we did our traditional Christmas ritual -- we lit some candles on a cake and sang Happy Birthday to Jesus. After all...that is the true reason for the season. Christmas Outreach

Below you can see the pictures from our Outreach at Good Samaritan Church. Many children and parents attended. It was such a good time of songs, crafts, food, and games. Pastor Francisco and Lulu were so excited to be able to have us come and host this fun day. The people were also excited because Americans have never come through this area and done anything like this before. At the end of the day, we were able to hand out Christmas gifts to each family represented. These were gifts donated through our Christmas For Reynosa program. Each family was given a supply of rice, beans, oil, blankets, detergent, and a bin of supplies (shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, lotion, razors, sanitizer, washcloths, chapstick, matches, and candy) all given in a reusable bag. These families didn't know they would be receiving anything on this day and their faces were priceless when they took this heavy bag into their hands. Many thanks and blessings were said as each bag was taken. These were only a portion of the bags provided by the generosity of people like you. The remaining bags have been distributed in several other Colonias in Reynosa. Your generosity has touched hundreds of people this Christmas. You have been used greatly to show the love of Christ and to provide these important supplies to people who desperately need them. Below you can see the pictures of the Santiago's house. We are hoping to have the doors and roof installed and the finish texture on the exterior by the end of this week. The work was quite difficult with the rain and the colder weather over the past couple weeks, but we are excited that it is almost complete.
Last week Scott also help a missionary we met a couple years ago by framing out and existing community center and future church. The work went quickly with the help of many hands. Right now the building is used as a feeding center for the schools located next door.
This week will be a busy one. Much to try to accomplish. We are very excited to be hosting a Christmas party for the women and children of Good Samaritan Church. We'll be making crafts and sharing a meal -- should be an exciting time. We will also be distributing some of the Christmas For Reynosa gifts that many people so generously donated. Will post pictures next weekend.

Just received a phone call from Scott and we are rejoicing greatly right now. We have been building a house for the Santiago family whose house burned totally to the ground several weeks ago. We were first introduced to this family because the sister was being counselled by a pastor friend of ours in Reynosa. Since we have been building their new house, the Santiago's and the sister have been attending church. This past Sunday, the sister came forward and dedicated her life to Christ. We are rejoicing because another has been added to the Kingdom and we have been given the privilege of being part of it. We are continuing to pray for the rest of the family to come to know Christ as well.
The house is almost complete, but we don't have the means to purchase the supplies needed for the roof. We are trusting that God will provide these things soon -- so this family can be in their new home. The weather here has been very cold and wet lately and the tarp we put up just doesn't do enough. The house needs about 2 more days of work for the exterior concrete work and then it will be complete (except the roof). The family is so excited and so are we. We pray that each one of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and were able to take the time to thank God for all of the many blessings in your lives. We hope that you enjoyed spending time with your family and friends -- and that you took a little extra time to tell them how thankful you are for each one. We spent the day with some family friends and their entire family. It was such a wonderful day.
This past week we continued work on the Santiago's house and have the exterior ready for the texture this week. We don't have the means to complete the roof at this time, but will do so as God provides. The family is so thankful for the work that we have done and it has truly been our pleasure to work alongside them.
Monday, the Pastor and his associate from Alpha & Omega Church will be working with Scott at the Santiago's house. This offers extra hands for Scott and we in turn can bless them with a meal and a days wage. Pastor Jose's wife's health hasn't been good for a while and when we visited on Saturday, her eyes were so yellow you could barely see the brown at all. Please be in prayer for this special family. We will be completing the roof at Alpha & Omega Mission at the end of December. We are so excited to be able to see this building from dirt to a completed structure.
We want to take just a moment to say to each one of you how very thankful we are for you. Your continued prayers, words of encouragement, and financial support has not only provided for our family -- but for many families across the border. We have seen God work through you in so many ways and thank you just doesn't seem to be enough. I sit with tear filled eyes as I think of the privilege it is to be able to do what we do -- and each one of you are part of the beautiful tapestry that God is creating with our lives here. Each one of you are a beautiful cord running throughout and without you the picture would be so much different. We pray for you and know that God will bless you greatly for the part you have played in bringing the hope and love of our Lord Jesus Christ to the people of Reynosa, Mexico. THANKS AGAIN. Update on the Santiago Home and ......

Today we poured the floor for the Santiago's new home. Jesus and Gerardo came along to help Scott out with the work -- some neighbors chipped in to get it all done by the end of the day. To save money, Scott and the men mixed the conrete on site instead of having the ready mix delivered to the home. It was a bit more work, but was more economical. We provided lunch for all the workers -- and even a few people from surrounding houses. (will post pics this weekend) The work site always seems to be filled with laughter. The joy of the Lord is contagious I think.

A few of us are still battling colds, but are trusting that we will be over them quickly. We hope to travel to Rio Bravo on Saturday and visit the site of a church that we will be helping build. So much work -- we are never bored.

There is so much work to do here and so many people to touch. We pray that God may lay it on the hearts of His people to come alongside us in the mission. Would you consider giving just a few days of your time to make an eternal difference in Mexico?? We would love to have you come for a visit. Not only would you bless the hearts of the people of Reynosa -- you would also be blessing the hearts of our family as well.

What's Happening.....

By the end of last week, Scott and Jesus were able to go ready the house (mentioned in my earlier post) for the dirt fill and concrete. Yesterday, Scott and Gerardo were able to visit for a little while with our friend Cruz -- who is always encouraging. Then they went and visited our pastor friend and the house site. Yesterday was a holiday so the dirt should come today hopefully. Today the work will continue at Good Samaritan Church in the morning and then possibly at the house site if the materials arrive. We're getting details finalized for a church group coming to work with us in March. We are so excited to see what God is going to do in them and through them -- and how much can be accomplished with many hands!!

Last week a few of us came down with the flu/colds -- and it seems to be lingering and spreading to the remaining healthy ones. Hopefully it will go away quickly.

Saturday, our older ones went to a Flashlight Corn Maze activity with their middle school group from church. They had a lot of fun!! The two little ones and I tucked in and watched a movie. Scott's mom is doing about the same. They have been trying to give her treatments every two weeks, but sometimes her counts aren't good enough. She feels OK most days, but gets tired very easy. Dad says she sleeps more than she used to. She's quite the fighter. We are still praying that God will speak through her to help turn the eyes of her unsaved relatives to Him.

A Pastor's Request

We were contacted on Tuesday night by a fellow missionary in Mexico that is a Pastor. We have known him the better part of our lives from Chicago. He has a woman in his congregation whose brother's house caught fire on November 1st and was completely destroyed. He contacted us to see if we could help rebuild this home. The Pastor isn't sure where the Santiago family stands in their relationship with God, but He felt reaching out and helping them would be a good way to show them the love of Christ in action.
On Wednesday Scott met with the Pastor and went to the location to see how we could come alongside them. He was met by the Santiago's. It was shared that father really didn't believe that anyone would help him. So, he was VERY excited to find out that we were going to help. How could we not?? God laid this passage on Scott's heart before ever going out there --I Jn. 3:17-18. We aren't sure how we will pay for the expenses of the build, but we know that we have to do all that we can.
We are trusting that God is going to provide all that we need to get this house rebuilt for this family of six. Last week Scott continued working at Good Samaritan Church. He worked on the outside wall and then on some drywall inside. The progress is amazing. Some friends of the pastor came for a visit and were shocked at how much work had happened since their last visit. PRAISE GOD!!
We went and picked up some food and supplies to take out to an orphanage. A family sent some money to purchase some fresh food and a gentleman donated a bunch of canned goods. What a blessing to these children.
We celebrated our 14 wedding anniversary this week. Wow the time has flown by. We went out as a family to a new BBQ place for dinner. It was so yummy!!
Scott and our oldest daughter went on a Life Challenge Retreat with the middle school group from church. They left on Friday and will be returning this evening. It sounds like they had alot of fun. So thankful she had this opportunity to go with her Daddy.
Went to a birthday party on Friday night for the son of the friend I told you about last week. It was fun. Lots of laughter!! Kids had fun too.
This week we will possibly be building some much needed benches for another church in the area and maybe going to visit the site of a new church building in Rio Bravo that we will be helping build. Also, we're getting the Christmas items together that people have provided for our outreach CHRISTMAS FOR REYNOSA. We are so excited. The kids are so excited to help put all the boxes together and hand them out. We are also planning 2 Christmas outreaches in the coming weeks. Lots of planning -- but so exciting.

Last week Scott returned to work at Good Samaritan Church. He and the Pastor went on a tour of another church in the area that is in need of help. Our project for this church will be some much needed pews. Scott and Jesus continued working on the block wall this week at Good Samaritan Church. Scott also started to dig the foundation for a bedroom addition off the Pastor's house. Right now they are a family of five in one very small bedroom. Scott's physical strength and stamina is amazing to the men he serves alongside. Pastor Francisco has said many times that he has never seen someone work so hard. His dedication speaks volumes to the pastors and the men he works with each day. My kids say "HE ROCKS!!" At the end of the day he comes home filthy -- we often joke about what the border agents must think when he crosses back - usually covered head to toe in concrete dust. He looks quite funny.
I've battled a migraine most of the week, but am hopefully on my way out. Am looking forward to not feeling yucky -- it seems like it's been forever. Am thankful that I am able to be up and around though.
The kids had a good week with school. They are all working so hard -- we are very proud. They went to the Fall Family Fiesta at church on Halloween. They were able to climb a rock wall, bungee jump (on a trampoline), and play on a bunch of inflatables. Did I mention that they ate cotton candy??? YUMMY!! It was a good night.
Today at church we ran into a girl that I have known since high school in Chicago -- had no idea that she was even in this area. Her older sister was in my class. We ate lunch with her family and had such a fun time catching up and swapping stories. Our kids had fun playing with their little ones. It was such a good time. Amazing how God sometimes causes paths to cross - even after all this time.
Tomorrow we get to spend the day with some friends from Mexico that we used to serve alongside. We are so excited. We miss their family so much and simply can't wait.

TWO YEARS AND COUNTING

We are celebrating two years of serving in Reynosa, MX. The time has flown by. When we first came, we were a bit unsure of exactly what God wanted us to do here. So, we would pray. And slowly but surely He began to make His plan clear to us. He took us down many different roads to get here -- but we finally arrived. We are so thankful for all the people we have met along this journey. Each one has touched our lives in a very special way. These two years haven't always been easy. At times we felt as though we were being put through the fire. But in the end, we could see it was just God refining us in order to serve Him more effectively. We wish that each of you could meet the Pastors and their families that we serve alongside. You would be deeply touched if you could get to know their hearts for their people. We count it such a blessing to be able to be part of their ministry in Reynosa. As we continue on our journey, we are confident that God will continue to provide for our work here. Right now we have about 10 churches that are in need. We pray that people will catch our vision and want to come down and take part in the work. Everyone is welcome. We would love to have families or church groups come and help us further the work here. There is much to do -- and many hands make light work. (Plus, we would enjoy the fellowship.) Our first group is coming in March and we are so excited. This will be the first "missions" experience for several of them - and we count it such a privilege to be a part of it.

We want to thank each one of your that has supported our ministry financially or through your prayers. We could not have made it thus far without you. The pictures above show the HUGE amount of work that happened in Reynosa this week. Scott, Pastor Jose, and Arturo (and some other men from the church) were able to get the walls built for the new church building. The days were long and hot -- so the weather change on Friday was a welcome relief. They started the walls on Monday morning and by Friday the walls were complete. Pastor Jose is so excited. This new building will be used to reach out to the children in the area - about 30-50 of them. Many of the little ones would come around to watch the progress of the building and some even helped. This building is really needed -- and we know that God has great things in store. We will continue with the roof as God provides the funds to do so. Thank you to each one of you who support us -- you have helped to build this building. God Bless.

Things are continuing to chug right along. Last week Scott was quite busy. He worked on the exterior wall at Good Samaritan Church in MX, worked a couple days with a friend in TX, and passed his CDL tests so he can help to transport kids and groups from church both in TX and MX.
I on the other hand had a different week. I have not felt good for several weeks. We thought it went away -- only for it to return again last week. I would really appreciate your prayers.
The kids are all doing well. Staying healthy and working hard in school. They are active in our church and have made many new friends since coming back from the orphanage.
Scott's mom had a scan that showed her cancer is continuing to grow, but has not spread to any other areas. Kind of a mixed blessing. They have started her on a new treatment -- time will tell. Would appreciate your continued prayers for both her and her husband -- that God will be very REAL to them at this time. That both Scott's dad and brother might come to know the Lord.

It's been a little while since our last update. We have had some "technical issues" with our Internet service. We hope that it is all resolved now, but only time will tell. Scott has continued working on the block wall outside the church. They are making pretty good progress. The work has had to stop a bit because of rainy weather, but then they just move on to projects inside the church instead. Jesus has turned out to be a very good worker. We give him a daily wage and a lunchtime meal. It's amazing that when Gerardo had to change his work schedule -- God brought Jesus along to help instead. Our prayer is that God will continue to provide for us to purchase materials for these churches so that this much needed work can continue.
Went out to Pillar of Hope on Monday and took a van load of food that we were able to get from a non-profit here in Texas. They were very thankful.
Scott's mom has been in and out of the hospital twice over the past 2 months. We are praying that the doctors can help to make her situation more comfortable and that Scott's dad will be drawn to the Lord through this situation. My sister is doing well with her health. We are very thankful for all of your prayers.
We went to visit with Minerva on Friday, but she was not at home. Her door was open - so we took the food inside. I opened the cabinets up again to find NO food. That is just something I cannot handle very well. We bring as much food as we can afford, and yet we know that it is never enough. I wonder how many days they simply go without??
Our kids are going into their 7th week of school. They are all doing extremely well. It takes a lot of time to school all four, but we are starting to finally get into a "groove".

Last week Scott worked at with Pastor Francisco on building a block wall to corner off the church property. Cars will sometimes drive carelessly through the area, and this is a way to keep them out. They were making progress when a man stopped by and asked if they needed help. So, now Scott has another helper - Jesus. Scott had the opportunity to attend a Men's Retreat with our church last weekend. They went to South Padre Island. He had a great time. There was wonderful teaching, worship, food, and "friendly" sports competitions. He was able to meet alot of new men. He really enjoyed himself. We were glad to have him back though.
My sister is doing well. She hasn't had any problems since her surgery. Scott's mom continues to have ups and downs. We are waiting to hear back about the results of a recent biopsy. Will keep you posted. Would ask for your continued prayers for my friend's little boy. He has been suffering with unexplained headaches for several weeks. They did some tests and said the brain was clear, but saw a cyst or something in one of his sinuses. They met with an ENT last week and didn't have much resolution -- so are seeking another's opinion. Difficult for a young kid to deal with consistent headaches.
Our kids are doing well. They're in the 4th week of school and are all doing well. It's sometimes challenging to be schooling at 4 different levels, but it's going pretty smoothly. We finally got a bit of rain over the past two weeks -- so thankful. We also had a break in the 100+ degree heat--very thankful.

This week we began working at a new church -Alpha Omega Church Mission - located in Colonia de la Calabaza with Pastor Jose. The block was purchased, the footings were dug, and the concrete was poured. The men worked for two days - one until 8:00pm getting the work finished. Many men came to help including some little ones. They jumped in right away and worked as hard as they could. It was hot and hard work, but no one complained -- it all got done. We will be working with this church again in October to build the walls.
Work also continued at Good Samaritan Church as well. More drywall hung, tape, texture, and sanding -- and worked to fill in some holes in the walls to make the building more weather resistant. Scott had a ladder give way on Thursday and he crashed to the ground -- his circular saw went flying. Gerardo rushed over to help -- Scott was ok, just a bit sore. We were very thankful it turned out so well. Another praise -- since working at this church, Scott & Pastor Francisco asked a man, Jaime, from the community to help with the outside texturing of the building. This man has had struggles with drugs and alcohol in the past - and didn't have anything to do with church. Well, Jaime has been attending church the past two weeks. We are so excited. That is the kind of thing we pray will continue to happen with each of the churches we come alongside.

This week was another great one. Scott accomplished a lot at Pastor Francisco's church. At the end of the week, he had an extra helper. One of our friends from the orphanage we served in - came and worked with Scott and Gerardo on Thursday and Friday. They enjoyed each other's company greatly -- and accomplished a lot.
I remained stateside this week. Still battling this headache. Tried to do some ministry work at home. The kids have been hanging out at home. Playing games, listening to music, having wrestling matches. It's been fun. We'll be starting school his coming week.
Scott and Gerardo will begin working on Alpha and Omega Mission church starting Monday. This is the construction of the new building. They will be working alongside Pastor Jose - who is experienced brick layer. He graduated from Rio Grande Bible Institute 12 years ago and we look forward to getting to know he and his family better over the next weeks.
Please continue to pray for Scott's mom. She has been in the hospital this week and was discharged last night. She arrived home and had a 20 minute coughing fit where she was coughing up clots of blood. Her cancer is in her lungs and this may be the cause. Please pray for continued comfort for her frail body and for peace for the rest of the family.
The School Supply Drive is in full swing and we are so excited about how many people are getting involved. Thank you to everyone who is making a difference here in Reynosa. We love you all.

This week Scott was joined by a boy that we taught in the school last year. He has become Scott's apprentice. Scott thought if he could train him in construction - it might make it easier for him to get a better job in the future. His helping is a blessing to us - another set of hands, but it also helps him to earn a living and a meal. The boys worked at the church Tuesday-Thursday - working on painting and drywall. The work is getting done - little by little. PRAISE GOD!!
I have been home not feeling well for the week. So, I've been working on computer and paper work. The kids are doing well and are excited to be starting school maybe next week. It will be a bit of a challenge to get back into the homeschool routine, but am looking forward to it.
Today, our whole family went to an orphanage on the outskirts of Reynosa. A family had donated funds to provide the orphanage with rice and beans. So we picked those items up along with some other things and took it out to the orphanage. It was in the middle of the country. I had never been there before, but Scott had been there last week for a short visit. The director was very excited for the help with the food and prayed a blessing over the giver. Our children helped to carry the food in and then we walked around the grounds for just a bit. It was a drastic difference compared to the orphanage we lived/served last school year. We pray that more families will want to come alongside this place and make a difference in the lives of these precious children. It was a good day. ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF HOW GOD ALWAYS PROVIDES!!

MEDICAL EMERGENCY

Late last Thursday night we received a phone call from a friend in Mexico. She was crying and telling us of a medical emergency. She asked if we could help her with some money for the doctor. She was having chest pains and they feared it was a problem with her heart. She wouldn't be able to be seen again by the doctor or receive the meds she needed unless she could pay the equiv. of $500USD. We are close with this family and come alongside them regularly with food/supplies/meds. She has had many medical problems over the past year and has stuggled to be able to pay the bills plus provide for her family. Their story is a difficult one. We published the need on Facebook, by email, on prayer lists, and by phone calls. We knew we had to do all that we could to help this family. We agreed to provide them the money from our own monthly funds and trust God would replace it.

On Friday, I went shopping and purchased food and supplies for them and met Scott to deliver the goods. We were greeted with hugs and tears. We gave her the money she needed and then brought in the food. I asked her if the things we brought were ok. She kept answering "It is good, It is good". Then she took me by the hand and showed me something I will never forget. They had NOTHING in the house to eat. I don't mean just a little bit - they had NOTHING!! This is when she broke down and cried. So did we. I don't know how long it had been since they ate, but we knew when she called that it was urgent for us to help them.

We want to say thank you to each one of you that has donated to help meet this need. Your generosity has been overwhelming. We have seen God in so many ways this week. We are speechless. We even have extra money to give them next month to help with her meds. This week, Scott has been working at Pastor Francisco's church hanging drywall in the classrooms and taping and mudding the drywall in the main church building. Went to visit an orphanage with Pastor Francisco to find out what type of needs they might have. Scott also went to another church on Monday afternoon which has Pastor's housing about 10% complete (20x30 bldg) 3 walls complete. It is attached to an existing church building. The pastor has been living somewhere else during the building - and has now found out he is needing to move. So they are in need of help to complete this home for he and his family. We are praying that God will supplies the means and the hands to complete this much needed project. I have been home this week a major migraine. I've been hanging out inside with the kids - doing ministry work. It's been a week of paperwork, planning, and computer work. We're halfway through the week and have accomplished many needed things. So in spite of the headache - it's been a good week.

UPDATE ON SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE

We have two locations for drop off. Beginning in August, supplies can be dropped off at Moraine Valley Church in Palos Heights on Sundays or during normal working hours throughout the week. We have extended the date until Sunday, August 23rd. Also, we have someone in Homer Glen that you can drop off items at her home. Please contact her at 708/301-1659 to set up a drop off time.

We are in the process of organizing our 2nd annual school supply drive for the needy children of Reynosa, Mexico. Last year - with your help - we were able to bless over 40 families with the much needed supplies. This year we would like to reach even more.

We are trying to set up drop off locations in the Chicago area and will update you with that information. Or you can drop them in the mail to us. We will be collecting through August 15th. We really need your help.

Won't you please consider picking up a few extra supplies when you walk by the school supply aisle over the next couple of weeks??

It's been quite a while since our last entry. We returned last Thursday after being gone for 2 1/2 weeks visiting family. We visited Scott's parents in FL first, then spent a couple days in the mountains in GA, and then went to my sister's home in SC. It was a busy couple of weeks, but a lot of fun. Scott's mom was doing pretty good while we were there, but has since not been so good. Please continue to pray for her and her ongoing battle with cancer. Please also continue to pray for the salvation of Scott's dad and brother. My sister is doing better. She still has some minor things she is dealing with, but we are so very thankful for the way that God has worked her whole situation out.

A small group from our home church came down on Friday and started to build two homes in the colonia where Bruce and Paula serve. Scott has been working alongside that team -- trying to make the work go a bit faster in the high heat. I've been working on ministry things at home with the kids. So much time goes into setting up computer stuff!!

The kids are trying to get adjusted to being back home. Bailey has battled not feeling well a few times. But they seem to be doing fine.

Looking forward to getting back across and visiting with our friends at the orphanage and in the surrounding colonias. A few weeks feels like an eternity to be away!! Thanks for your continued prayers.

Our two younger kids had a blast at VBS last week. Thank you so much to everyone who served. What a blessing.

This week we will be celebrating Clay's birthday. My how the time has flown by.
We will also be going across to Reynosa to check in on some friends and make sure they have the food and supplies they need for the time we are gone. Scott will be helping a friend stateside with some electrical work on Tuesday. We have a birthday party on Friday for the son of another missionary couple. Then we will be getting ready to head to Florida to see family. Scott's mom has been battling cancer for 3+ years, and it now seems that the cancer is getting the upper hand. Yesterday Scott's dad said that she definitely seems to be getting worse. We look forward to spending time with them. The kids look forward to seeing family. We will then end up in SC with my sisters and their families. We will be driving alot -- but we are so excited to see family. Please pray for us this week as we prepare to leave. Much to plan -- much to do.

Our NEEG Experience for the week

We had taken our big van in to get the A/C working in the front. The rear was working -- but the front just wouldn't blow. We took it to a reputable business for repair. Upon receiving the quote -- we thought it was high, but we trusted the work would be done well. After 2 days of work -- they repaired a small leak in the rear A/C and replaced the condenser, but the front still didn't blow. Somehow they didn't notice it wasn't working. The owner said we could bring it back another time and they could see if something was in the ducts -- it would cost much -- just bring it back. So, we paid several hundred $$ for the initial work and agreed to bring it back. So, we brought it back this week. We would call to check on the status and they would tell us -- we know what it is -- it needs _____. Nothing worked. Well after 6 days of total work -- Scott felt it best to just go get the van and take it somewhere else. We were really discouraged. We had paid so much and now another bill was waiting for us -- and we were no better off then when we first started. After talking to a friend we found out the owner was a Christian. We were even more discouraged. Scott had shared our ministry on the first day with him -- and this is how he treats a customer??? We prayed before we headed over and had others praying as well. When we arrived we were told the amount the bill would be and Scott began to question what we were paying for. After much discussion with the lead mechanic and then the owner -- the owner decided to come check out the work for himself. He saw that it wasn't blowing at all!! He pulled it up on car lift "thingy" to check things out. Within 30 minutes he found that two wires were crossed -- from the factory. He switched them around and it worked. Praise God. There was truly No Explanation Except God (NEEG). We are so thankful!!! We now have A/C -- which will come in handy on the 100+ degree days we'll be having here.

We went and visited with Pastor Francisco and LuLu on Thursday and tried to plan out how we can accomplish all that needs to be done at their church - The Good Samaritan Church. It was nice to sit and visit with the family. They are a very sweet family with a daughter who is almost 2 and a set of twins that are almost 1. My kids love to go and play with the babies -- and help take care of them. We mixed some paints together to try and find a color for part of the church. Scott went back on Saturday and was taping and mudding the ceiling in the main room. It was sagging because the drywall had been installed last year and was never finished. The humidity definitely got the worst of it. We have several projects on tap for July and beyond and the church. We also have several other churches that are awaiting our help as well. God has continued to open so many doors -- it is amazing. We continue to wait on the Lord for the provision of the finances and supplies we need to reach these areas.
This week:
-- we are planning our trip to Florida to visit Scott's family- then we will head up to South Carolina and visit with my family for a few days before returning to Texas.
-- still working on organizing all of our things from the move back from the orphanage.
-- are working on our ministry website.
-- our kids have VBS W,Th, and Fri at our church

The visit with my sister and her family was a wonderful one. It was great to be able to be there and help out where I could -- and just spend time with the family. Our thankfulness to God for the outcome of Stacy's surgery continues. When we went to Charleston for her recheck they told her that at the beginning of the surgery, they found brain matter coming through the defect in her sinus cavity. They went ahead and had to remove it and seal it off. That was a definitely unexpected turn. We are so thankful that the doctors were able to take care of the problem and that there will hopefully be no long term side affects. It's undetermined what caused this whole problem -- but we are so thankful that it has been taken care of and will no longer be a problem. She will go for a final check on the 22nd and they will check to see if the patch has fully sealed the defect or not. Stacy went back to work yesterday -- and it was exhausting for her. Please continue to pray that she will heal fully and that working will be easier each day.

Please also pray for Scott's mom. After a scan a couple weeks ago, they determined that her cancer has continued to grow and spread. She is still trying to do treatments, but is sometimes too sick to receive them. We are planning a visit in the next couple of weeks. She wants to see everybody. Scott's brother will also go for a visit at the beginning of July. Please pray for Fran and her comfort. Please pray for the salvation of Scott's dad and brother. Please pray for our kids -- it's been really hard for them to watch Grandma be sick for a while. One of them was praying the other day and said "Jesus, we know that You want Grandma up there with You -- but we would like to keep her a while longer down here." Please also pray for Scott. We appreciate your continued prayers.

Thank you so much to each one of you who has been praying for my sister Stacy. We went to Charleston today for her Dr. appointment and they removed the tube that was in her nose -- and removed the stitches from her back and nose. They said she looked pretty good. She will go back in 2 weeks for another visit. She is feeling pretty good -- some discomfort behind her one eye and still a bit of drainage from her nose. But other than that -- she is doing pretty good. She is hoping to be able to return to work by the end of next week.

I have enjoyed my time with her and her family. Don't like the circumstances-- but am so thankful that I have been able to be here. Will be here until Monday evening.

UPDATE ON MY SISTER

Stacy's surgery started a little later than they expected, but it's done. She didn't have any complications -- and the doctors feel the surgery went well. She is in recovery right now and will be transfered to a room within the hour. She is awake -- just a bit nauseated. Please continue to pray for her over these next couple of days. Pray that she will have no complications and that her discomfort will be very minimal.

We are so relieved to be through this part -- now, on to recovery!! I leave Monday at 6am to head to SC. Please be in continued prayer for my sister and her family -- as well as my family that I am leaving behind in TX.

My sister is scheduled for surgery some time tomorrow. We won't know the exact time until this afternoon. She and her family will leave today to travel to Charleston for the surgery. I will be leaving early Monday morning to go to South Carolina for a few days to try and help out. Please continue to hold her and her family up in your prayers. We really appreciate it.
